BalanceHER Practices
Women’s Yuan Qi Qigong & Body-Led Practice
Ancient roots. Real bodies. Everyday life.
BalanceHER practice is rooted in women’s Yuan Qi Qigong and shaped by more than three decades of movement, martial arts, teaching and lived experience.
It is not another list of things women must do perfectly.
It is a way of returning to the body through movement, breath, rhythm, grounding and quiet awareness.
Sometimes you have time for a longer practice.
Sometimes you have ninety seconds.
Both count.
THE MOVEMENT ROOT
Yuan Qi Qigong
More than thirty years ago, I was introduced to women’s Yuan Qi Qigong through Lin Xiaomei, an elder from Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
It was different from the modern standardised Health Qigong system I later studied formally.
The practice was slower, quieter and internally focused.
It asked for attention.
Not performance.
And it taught me something that has stayed with me ever since:
The body does not always need more effort.
Sometimes it needs better information.
The original practice belonged to a very different rhythm of life.
As I began teaching women with work, children, responsibilities, changing bodies and very little spare time, I started exploring how its principles could remain useful without turning the practice into another obligation.
BalanceHER grew from that long conversation.
Not by replacing Yuan Qi Qigong.
By learning from it.
WHAT BALANCEHER PRACTICE IS
A practice that meets the body you have today
BalanceHER is not one fixed routine.
It is a women-centred body of practice shaped around a simple idea:
The body changes.
Good practice responds.
Some days the body needs movement.
Some days it needs restoration.
Some days it needs grounding.
Some days it needs quiet.
And sometimes it feels perfectly well and simply needs tending.
BalanceHER uses selected movement, breath, rhythm and body-awareness practices to help women notice what is happening and respond without turning self-care into another performance.
The deeper methods are taught inside the book, guided practice, workshops and specialist BalanceHER work.
The public website gives you the doorway.
The practice goes deeper.
THE BODY ALREADY KNOWS SOMETHING
We are not starting from nothing
Your body already knows how to shift its weight.
How to breathe.
How to sigh.
How to feel the ground.
How to soften after holding too much.
How to become tired.
How to become strong.
How to recognise that something feels different today.
Modern life can make those signals surprisingly easy to miss.
BalanceHER helps you notice them again.
Not because the body needs to become something new.
Because it is useful to hear what is already there.
A DIFFERENT RELATIONSHIP WITH MOVEMENT
Slow does not mean weak
I come from martial arts.
So BalanceHER is not an argument against strength, effort or challenge.
Women need strength.
We need mobility.
We need balance.
We need enough physical capacity to live well.
But strength is not the same as permanent intensity.
Slow movement can reveal things speed hides.
Where is the weight?
Where are you gripping?
Are you holding your breath?
Is one shoulder volunteering for work it was never asked to do?
That is one of the reasons Yuan Qi Qigong sits so naturally at the movement root of BalanceHER.
It gives us another gear.
Forging is a gear.
It is not the whole gearbox.
GROUNDING
Stability inside movement
Grounding is often reduced to bare feet and grass.
I have nothing against grass.
But grounding is not a barefoot religion.
BalanceHER uses grounding more practically:
Can you feel your feet?
Can you feel where your weight is?
Can you stay organised while something around you changes?
Cape Town’s South-Easter remains an excellent teacher.
Grounding is not the absence of movement.
Grounding is stability inside movement.
Deeper BalanceHER practice develops this through selected movement and body-awareness work.
You do not need the whole system to begin noticing your feet.
BREATH
Do not make breathing another job
Sometimes the first useful breath is simply the one you notice.
BalanceHER works with comfortable, natural breathing alongside movement and stillness.
The aim is not to take the largest breath possible.
Or to turn breathing into another performance metric.
Breath should support the practice.
Not become another thing you are worried about doing correctly.
INNER SILENCE
Quiet does not mean nothing is happening
Inner Silence is part of the deeper BalanceHER practice.
Sometimes it follows movement.
Sometimes it is simply a pause.
A moment where you are not fixing, planning, replying or solving.
For some women, that moment lasts several minutes.
For others it happens while the kettle is boiling.
Both can be useful.
Stillness is not the absence of practice.
Sometimes it is where you finally notice what the practice changed.
WOMEN’S RHYTHM
You are not the same woman every day
BalanceHER is women-centred because women’s bodies change.
Across the menstrual years.
Pregnancy and postpartum for some women.
Perimenopause.
Menopause.
Older age.
And all the ordinary days between those headings.
This does not make women fragile.
It makes rigid practice rather unhelpful.
Some days stronger work feels excellent.
Some days the same practice feels expensive.
The skill is not forcing identical output.
The skill is learning to respond.
Balance is the ability to respond.
SECOND SPRING
The choreography changes
Perimenopause and menopause can alter the way a woman experiences sleep, temperature, recovery, mood, strength, energy and movement.
BalanceHER does not treat that transition as the end of anything.
Nor does it pretend every woman experiences it in the same way.
The practice changes with the woman.
The aim is not to force yesterday’s body to keep yesterday’s rules.
The body changes the choreography.
The dancer does not disappear.
Deeper Second Spring guidance sits within BalanceHER’s women-specific work.
THE 90-SECOND RETURN
Small does not mean shallow
The 90-second practice exists for a very ordinary reason:
real life is busy.
Ninety seconds is enough to begin noticing.
Enough to move.
Enough to interrupt a pattern.
Enough to remember the body is there.
It is not the whole practice.
And it is not a magical number.
It is simply a useful doorway.
Some days you stop there.
Some days you continue.
There is no prize for making wellness difficult.
PRACTICE THAT FITS REAL LIFE
The practice goes where you go
BalanceHER does not begin only when the room is quiet and you have found the correct trousers.
Practice can appear in ordinary moments.
Before a difficult conversation.
After sitting too long.
When your jaw has joined management.
When your shoulders have decided to attend every meeting with your ears.
When your body is asking for less.
Or when you feel perfectly well and simply want to preserve what is working.
Small moments count because they are the moments we actually have.
WHAT BALANCEHER KEEPS DEEPER
Some things need teaching
Not every BalanceHER practice belongs on a public webpage.
The deeper work includes methods that require context, movement quality, adaptation and sometimes direct teaching.
These are explored through:
- BalanceHER Journey
- guided online practice
- workshops and livestreams
- deeper BalanceHER books and specialist material
That is intentional.
A written explanation can tell you why something matters.
It cannot always teach you how to do it well.
The book helps you understand.
Practice helps you embody it.
BALANCEHER JOURNEY
The deeper why
BalanceHER Journey — Second Edition explains the wider story behind the work.
Yuan Qi Qigong.

It is written in plain language.
Made clear.
But never made shallow.

FINAL INVITATION
Begin where you are
You do not need to remember everything.
You do not need to become an expert in Qigong.
And you certainly do not need another impossible wellness routine.
Begin with one useful thing.
Notice.
Move.
Breathe.
Return.
The root is the truth.
Wellness is not perfection. It is return.
